“The Eighth Sister” is a poem I wrote the summer before my senior year of undergrad at Rutgers University, inspired by my creative writing and walking study abroad experience in the South of England, particularly the Seven Sisters. It was part of my creative writing certificate portfolio and was originally published in The Anthologist.
The Eighth Sister
Let me be a chalk cliff and take the sea and the sky as my lovers
Let me be ever-changing, cleaving, and receding
A goddess of green and white strewn with gems of petals
I want to be a home, a fortress of rock and grass
Let my soul come back to that ancient wonderland
And look out over the glass sea
Let me dive over the edge and not be scared
because I will no longer be made of flesh and bone
I will be sand, sea breeze, and saltwater
Washing away the blood of my years
